A ZenBusiness Alternative With Nothing Waiting at Renewal
Iowa registered agent representation, billed at $99 per year. Includes the office address on your filings, same-day scanning of legal mail, and reminders for state deadlines.
Fair warning about who is talking here. This page belongs to IA Registered Agent.org, and the right-hand column of the table further down is a product you can buy from us. The ZenBusiness figures are not ours to spin; they sit on that company's own pricing page and take a minute to confirm, so confirm them.
The Software Is Genuinely Good
ZenBusiness has built the nicest interface in this corner of the market, and pretending otherwise would cost this page its credibility in the first paragraph. Formation paperwork, filing status, and incoming agent mail all land in one console that somebody clearly thought about. If you want a business admin dashboard with the agent role occupying one tile inside it, that is a defensible thing to buy.
The Opening Term and the Operating Term
Purchased on its own, without a formation package underneath, ZenBusiness registered agent service runs $99 plus state fees for the first term. From the first renewal forward it is $199 a year. Neither figure is hidden and neither is wrong. The second one, though, is the money your Iowa company actually spends, because an entity here keeps an agent for as long as it exists, not for twelve months.
Nothing about the underlying job changes when the price doubles. Somebody at an Iowa street address has to be available during business hours to accept a summons on your behalf, and that duty in year six is identical to that duty in year one. A rate that steps up on schedule is tracking the calendar, not the work.
There is a second detail folded into the opening figure. The phrase "plus state fees" leaves the first invoice open ended, since what you hand over at checkout moves with whichever filings you attach to the order.
| Cost | ZenBusiness (standalone) | IA Registered Agent.org |
|---|---|---|
| Opening term | $99 plus state fees | $99 |
| Each renewal | $199 | $99 |
| Six years (three Iowa report cycles) | $1,094 plus state fees | $594 |
Five hundred dollars separates those two totals, and the statutory duty performed is word for word the same on both sides.
Everything Inside Our $99
Ready when you are. Ordering takes about five minutes.
Order Here- The same figure at signup and at every renewal. No introductory term, no step-up, no tier you graduate into.
- Service of process scanned the day a server hands it over at our Iowa office, then emailed and dropped in your portal.
- Our Iowa street address printed where yours would otherwise sit, on every filing that asks for a registered office.
- A nudge before each odd-year filing window opens, which in Iowa means January of 2027 and every other January after that.
- One optional extra at $15 per item, covering general business mail if you would like that imaged too.
Calling $99 the smallest number available in Iowa would be false, so we will not. BetterLegal advertises $90 a year and that is the floor we know about. What $99 buys is a seat in the low band of Iowa pricing plus a renewal invoice that reads exactly like the first one.
Replacing ZenBusiness on the Iowa Record
Iowa handles this with a single sheet, numbered 635_0119, which the Secretary of State uses to update a registered office, a registered agent, or both at once. It goes to the Business Services Division, either as paper or through the Fast Track Filing system, and for a limited liability company the state's charge is nothing at all. That zero is not an agency courtesy that could be revoked next budget year; Iowa Code § 489.122(1)(g) prints "No fee" beside this filing in the statute itself. Partnerships pay $5 on the identical sheet, which is worth knowing if you are reading this for one.
Two mechanical points. Iowa insists that whatever you list as the registered office be the very same street address your new agent uses as its own place of business, so the address on file always belongs to whoever is actually answering the door. And the designation you sign affirms that the incoming agent has consented to serve, which means the replacement has to be hired before the paperwork can honestly be completed. Appoint first, file second, and cancel the ZenBusiness subscription only once the state's business search shows the new name. Done in that order your record never carries a blank agent line for a single day.
Now put that zero back into the table above. When the exit costs nothing, switching friction drops out of the comparison entirely and the six-year totals stand on their own. The $500 difference is not offset by a filing fee, a transfer charge, or a penalty, because Iowa levies none of them. Our Iowa change of agent walkthrough takes the form one line at a time.
