Iowa Agent Service at $99, Weighed Against LegalZoom's $249

Iowa registered agent representation, billed at $99 per year. Includes the office address on your filings, same-day scanning of legal mail, and reminders for state deadlines.

You should know before the first comparison that we are not a neutral party. IA Registered Agent.org wrote this, sells Iowa registered agent service, and would like your business. The LegalZoom numbers quoted below are that company's own published rates, verified in July 2026, and they are the part of this page you can check without trusting us at all.

Buying the Name Is Not Irrational

LegalZoom is the one company in this category that people have heard of before they need it, and that recognition has genuine value. A founder with three unfamiliar vendor names on a screen and no way to tell them apart can reasonably pick the familiar one and stop thinking about it. Their support infrastructure is large, their business has been running for decades, and nobody has ever been fired for choosing them. If paying more to skip a research afternoon is a trade you want, that is a real trade.

The Rate Is $249 and It Comes Back Every Year

Registered agent service from LegalZoom costs $249 annually. Our July 2026 check found no introductory rate and no first-year markdown anywhere on the offer, which is more consistent than much of this market manages. The service auto-renews, so year two arrives on your card without a decision from you.

That last part is the piece worth sitting with. Automatic renewal is convenient right up until the moment it is not, and the moment it is not tends to be the year you meant to shop around and forgot.

Three hundred dollars every two years, for an obligation Iowa describes in a single sentence: keep a registered agent with a place of business in the state.

The statutory function does not scale with price. Whether you pay $99 or $249, an Iowa entity gets one attended street address, one person authorized to accept service of process, and one name printed in the Secretary of State's records. There is no premium version of that obligation and no discount version either.

On our side of the ledger, the $99 covers process served at our Iowa office being scanned and emailed before that business day closes, our address standing in for yours on public filings, alerts ahead of every odd-year biennial window, and a renewal price identical to the signup price. Checkout holds one item, so there is nothing to decline on the way through.

Since we are being careful with claims: $99 is not the cheapest agent price in the country. BetterLegal lists $90 a year. Our position is the low end of the published Iowa range rather than the bottom of it, and the honest version of the pitch is that our number does not move.

Leaving LegalZoom Under Iowa's Rules

Iowa's part of this is short and free. One state form, numbered 635_0119, updates your registered agent and the matching registered office address in a single filing. Business Services, the division at the Iowa Secretary of State that keeps entity records, receives it. Iowa Code § 489.116 authorizes the change, and no fee attaches to it for an LLC. A caution on research: chapter 489 was renumbered at the start of 2024, so older guides send you to a section number that no longer covers agent changes.

Sequence it this way. Hire the replacement first. The form wants the incoming agent's name and its Iowa business street address, and neither line can be filled in speculatively. File the change second. Watch for it to appear in the state's business records third. Cancel with LegalZoom last, after the record confirms the handoff, so your entity is never listed in Iowa without an agent behind it.

The only money genuinely at stake in the move is whatever you have already prepaid LegalZoom for a term you will not finish. Iowa adds nothing on top of that: no exit charge, no transfer fee, no processing cost hiding in the paperwork. Whatever notice your existing agreement calls for is between you and that vendor; the state's half is a signature. Our guide to changing agents in Iowa has the detail, and the pricing page shows every number we charge.
